  • Kudos !! #surf International Review is in for Gnarly Wave Volume One. This one is from - France. Regis Gaudin gave the release a smashing write-up. We have translated if here for you.
     
    Excellent label multiplying held high outputs (garage rock of Zombie Garden Club, Gothic rock Secret Lie), Bongo Boy Records launches into compilatoire year. After volumes devoted to blues and garage rock (which we have the opportunity to talk about soon), this disc is interested in a language that we like in these columns, thus totally summery season: the surf music. Born in the early 1960s surf music, is inseparable from California, advocating a lifestyle in the cool, feet in the sand. This disk provides an overview in its instrumental version, modern surfing scene, each group will present from its little originality while remaining true to the genre codes. Thus, the disc could listen as a travel guide drawing up a list of spots. In this context, "Lava Spout" Blue Wave Theory Theory group would be Jamaica with reggae arrangements. "Happy Beach Song" James and the James Moore Enigmatic Light Band represent Hawaii through a ukulele, emblematic instrument of the archipelago. The rock sound and powerful, near the garage, Jenny And The Felines - "Psychedelic Sea", which landed in the palm of premium coolest title - evoke rather Teahupoo, Tahiti's impressive left. These fifteen tracks form a homogeneous and coherent and his ideal band for all vacation makers.

  • I am back with another review for Bongo Boy. This time around Bongo Boy asked me to give a listen and share my thought about their new compilation album Gnarly Wave Volume One. I have to admit my first thought when I heard the title of the album was “Oh no, I hate the Beach Boys.” Then I thought to myself that really isn’t fair. There are a lot of good players who contribute to the Surf genre. Not liking Surf because you don’t like the Beach Boys is like dismissing Country because you don't like Patsy Cline. (Yes, I know she is a Country goddess, but her music gets on my nerves.) The point is: Hank Williams III is one of my favorite musicians and had I dismissed all Country due to my dislike of Patsy Cline I never would have heard Hank3. So, with that in mind, I sat down to listen to Gnarly Wave Volume One.

    So folks, what is the bottom line? The bottom line is that this is another really enjoyable compilation album from Bongo Boy. If you are a fan of the Surf genre you will surely enjoy this album. If you are simply Surf-curious, this is a good album to start with. I enjoyed listening to these tracks and think you will as well.

The birth of the genre of Instrumental Surf music was around 1960, where at first the sounds of the Surf were emanating from Southern California. It eventually spread to all over America and made its way to various music markets all over the world. Suddenly, we were “invaded” from bands in the United Kingdom, such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, the Zombies, to name a few, who brought to the marketplace another new sound. Plus a whole new set of bands sprung up in the USA too!! The 1960’s was when music changed dramatically, bringing us Pop, Rock, Motown, Psychedelic, Garage Rock and others). All of these new artists, which essentially did vocals, became so popular that instrumental Surf music appeared to quietly fade to oblivion. Yet in fact, it never went away. When the motion picture “PULP FICTION” was released in 1994, the Instrumental Surf genre was back in vogue. And it has grown by leaps and bounds. There are more bands today from all over the world then when Surf music first got its start.

    Thus, Bongo Boy Records is official opening to all artists an opportunity to be considered for inclusion in “GNARLY WAVE VOLUME ONE”. Please submit your music to Bongo Boy Records, noted for its Worldwide Distribution including in the marketplaces of Asia and Africa.
